Exterior wood, will, from exposure to the elements fade and turn grey as well as catch some dirt, bird droppings, water stains etc., so before you consider treating or oiling your decking etc it is strongly recommended that you clean it first to end up with the best result.

Note: If the wood was treated with oils, stains etc, still present, we recommend you remove that FIRST with Prepdeck because Net-Trol will not remove oils or coatings.

Here''s how.

All you''ve got to do is wet the wood thoroughly, apply a mixture of one part Net-Trol to about three parts water (the less water the stronger the mix) and apply with anything like a clean sweeping brush, or whatever is handy.

After about 10 minutes, it is a good idea to slightly agitate the applied cleaner with something like a stiff bristled nylon brush just to help ''work it in'' to the pores etc.

After about 30 minutes, rinse off thoroughly with clean water.

If you''re doing this job on a dry sunny day, and the Net-Trol cleaning treatment is drying out prematurely, just moisten the area with a fine mist from a garden hose to keep it wet, because the cleaning action stops working if it dries out.

If the wood has been really dirty or very badly faded, you may need to repeat the above exercise.

You will see a vast difference in the look of the wood and the original colour will come right back.

When the cleaned wood dries out, it will brighten to some degree but it will look very much like it did when new.

Peeled or flaky old varnished surfaces (windows, doors etc)

If you''ve got badly peeled, varnished wood, (exterior) which has become faded, you can bring back the original appearance without too much effort or expense.

First, strip all remaining varnish off which can be done relatively easy using a paint stripper like Nitromors. (Follow makers instructions carefully) OR, if you do a lot of this kind of work you should check out the SpeedHeater elsewhere on this site - very fast.

When all the old varnish is removed, wash off all traces of the stripper thoroughly, a power washer at medium pressure is recommended.

When all traces of old varnish and stripper have been removed & contaminants thoroughly rinsed off, you can restore the original colour of the faded wood with Net-Trol.

Make sure the wood is as wet as possible, then apply Net-Trol with a brush.

Leave it for about twenty to thirty minutes. Agitate slightly with a stiff nylon bristled brush and then rinse off. You will be amazed at how new the wood will look after you''ve done this.

If you leave the wood untreated after the above cleaning exercise, it will simply return to its previously faded, dirty condition in a few weeks, so we recommend you treat the wood. Here are two suggestions.

If you want a matte finish, we recommend two coats of Textrol which is a high quality penetrating, anti-UV, non-film building oil. Textrol is available in Clear (Like wood after rain) & Golden Oak (a little darker) & Rustic Oak (a little darker again)

Another superb, long lasting, non-peel alternative is the Deks Olje D1 (matte finish by itself) or used in conjunction with Deks Olje D2 which gives a fabuluous, rich, high gloss finish that will NOT peel or crack. (See Deks Olje on Wood care Exterior elsewhere on this site)
