General Detail
Although formulated or invented for a completely different purpose, i.e. making oil-based paint flow better and helping hiding & covering power, making a painter's job easier, Owatrol Oil was accidentally discovered to be an exceptional rust remover / treatment by an inquisitive maintenance man whose job it was to look after one of the many large steel cargo ships lying idle, tied up in the ports of the Great Lakes in the U.S.A. during the great depression of the mid 1930's.
He observed that when he applied Owatrol Oil to the rusted steel, that the rusting activity stopped and it stayed that way for years.
Since then, apart from scores of other uses being discovered for Owatrol Oil, it's powerful reputation as being one of the most effective rust treatments ever known, has gradually spread from one contractor to another to virtually every corner of the planet and mostly by word of mouth.
There was virtually no advertising done anywhere!
No big impressive TV campaigns or colourful glossy magazine adverts, just plain old word of mouth, one satisfied user telling another over a pint in the local, or down at the local paint store while waiting for some paint to be mixed.
Thanks to this wonderful internet, You too have an opportunity of learning about this great rust treatment.
Despite the fact that it is known around these parts for only about 10 years, Owatrol is now the rust solution of choice for a vast array of applications ranging from such diverse places as the steel park railings on Dublin’s main parks, to the cannons and hand rails in the Tower of London, to countless railings, gates, fire escapes, wrought iron, narrow boats, vintage cars, vintage tractors, and so on throughout the UK & Ireland. Rust repair is fast and easy with Owatrol Oil.
In France, where it is known for decades, Owatrol is the top selling rust removers, rust repair products by far.
How does Owatrol Oil Work?
Owatrol works in a strange, yet common sense way.
Being wetter than water, when it is applied to rusted steel, it penetrates all the way in to the 'good' steel at the back.
During this process, it literally drives out all existing water & moisture & air lurking in there in the rust’s pores.
That water / moisture / air combination is the ‘food’ for rust and when the ‘food’ is taken away, the rust stops – simple as that!
The Owatrol oil acts a bit like an invader / occupier in that it moves into the rust’s pores, deeper that water ever could, and in so doing, takes it’s place inside the rust’s pores where it takes over the ‘territory’ and because it then dries out to a varnish like coating, the ‘rust food’ is unable to get back in which in turn, stops the rust activity dead in it’s tracks.
This ‘holding action’ will remain like that literally for years until movement from expansion & contraction; abrasion etc eventually opens up new channels for new rust to invade again. That's why Owatrol is such a simple and uniquely effective product for rust treatment.
For another example which shows how Owatrol works is seen on this picture which shows a steel bar / support attached to a wooden door and the steel would have been rusted on the inside between the wood and the steel where normally you cannot get at to clean / paint etc.
Owatrol will creep down in behind the steel and drive out all water, moisture and air and takes it's place to prevent any further rusting action.
How to Use Owatrol To Treat Rust.
There are a few methods of treating rust with Owatrol, and we call them the good, better and best options. Rust prevention is a simple affair if you use Owatrol oil.
Choose whichever option suits your circumstances.
Here we outline those three options summarised as follows:
* No 1 - Good: Apply neat from the tin. Will stop the rust and hold it back for about 2 years or so, a very easy to do quick, yet very effective job. Freshens up the look of the steel.
* No 2 - Better: As above, but followed by a coat of gloss paint with Owatrol Oil mixed in to the paint. This acts like an additional coat on a cold day, can add about 50% to life expectancy.
* No 3 - Best: A combination of the above two steps but with an additional primer coat sandwiched in between.
That additional layer of protection adds substantially to the life expectancy of the treatment and is the way to go when you are particular and want the best and time and trouble is not a factor.
